The problem with most self-help or leadership training books is that the advice is sometimes too vague and the text is often replete with cliché quotes that are too contextually distant to understand or irrelevant to the reader. 52 Leadership Tips to Live By is not one of those typical “self-help” books, but actual leadership training at its best.

This book is a refreshing take on leadership training that gets down into the details on how to make the reader a more effective leader. S.L. Mackey offers 52 no nonsense strategies that apply to any reader’s professional life where she goes far beyond the categorization of just leadership-training. The book is broken down into 52 tips that correspond to each of the weeks in a year.

My favorite tip from the book is, “Never Cut that which You Can Untie.” I went back to read this tip several more times and I was able to gain something new each time. I am the type of person that if something in my writing is not working, I will scrap the whole thing and start over. Next time I will reconsider cutting something I can untie.

A few of the week’s tips were too short and had me begging for more. Most tips were great, in-depth, detailed, and gave step-by-step how to’s, while some passages were short snippets that lacked real vision. They felt like filler episodes between attainable action passages.

Mackey’s vision for the book is clear and concise. It offers real steps toward change and encourages action from the reader. She has expertly positioned the text for the leader to look more than just within, but to look toward others and appreciate them. Mackey’s book is a must read and I recommend it from new entrepreneurs to industry giants and anyone in-between.
