I love learning about new things, so when the opportunity arose to read Walking with Elijah by Doobie Shemer, I was instantly intrigued by the subject matter. I had read a little about shamanism, but I still was unclear about what it actually was. By reading about Shemer’s life journey, this ancient practice has become clearer and even appealing.

Shemer is someone everyone can relate to – he is a family man living the American Dream, but work has consumed his life. He starts looking for something to fill the void in his life and stumbles across shamanism, which is a sort of spiritual meditation used in order to find the answers to life’s seemingly unanswerable questions. Shemer describes his experiences in meeting his Power Animals, Teacher, and Spiritual Guide with vivid descriptions and beautiful language that makes it easy to visualize exactly what he is trying to portray.

While I realize that Shemer had a specific audience in mind who would know exactly what shamanism is, some more background information would have been helpful for those readers who might not know what to expect when picking up this book. But other than the initial puzzlement within the first few chapters, Shemer does a really good job of keeping the reader intrigued and even involved in the story. It definitely made me wonder about my own life and if I could someday become involved in a journey like this!

At the end of the book, I felt like I really knew the author on a more intimate level, which is not easy for a writer to do. Shemer told his story in a way that was easy to wrap my head around at the end and left me searching for answers to my own questions about life.

I would definitely give Walking with Elijah four out of five stars!

Cheers!
