Wrap yourself in a complex story that will have you wondering, what’s next? Vaun Murphrey’s “Chimera,” is a tale about an imprisoned girl who has the ability to save a race of people she doesn’t even know exist. From the very beginning, the author captures reader’s attention with characters that exhibit unusual behaviors and are placed in bizarre settings. Not completely certain of the direction in which Murphrey is taking, the reader is at the will and mercy of the writer. But is that such a bad thing?
In this science fiction adventure, readers will find themselves needing to decipher where this book is going. It is that need that will have them plunging through the four hundred and so pages, only to find that book II holds some of their unanswered questions. Yes, “Chimera” is a bit lengthy, but the author is indeed setting readers up for something epic! I can just feel it.
As Murphrey’s main character, Cassandra, is released from one prison and somewhat confined to another, she learns more about herself, her past, and her purpose. However, the confliction one might find with this story is the fact that Cassandra is only thirteen years old. Yet, her behaviors and emotional as well as intellectual characteristic, appear to mirror a much older individual. There is a passage toward the end of the book that Cassandra’s…let us call it her inner self, to refrain from this review being a spoiler. Cassandra’s inner self states, “Love can be a shadow. At times it protects you, blessing you with its coolness. At others, it steals your warmth and hides what you fear in the dark….” These words are so true, but how on earth would a child really understand the complexities of love unless they have a knowing that exceeds their physical makeup? Trust me, once you read this book and get the answer to this one question, you are going to be blown away at what Cassandra can really do.
I give Chimera 4 ½ stars out of 5
Happy Reading
