Every
book has a heartbeat. And while reading Kristen Cast’s “Amber Smoke,” the
rhythmic thumps that held this book together included the unrelenting art of
destined love and sheer curiosity. It was love that created the chaos within
the underworld and hopefully love would restore what was lost. And it was Cast’s
ability to write in a way that kept reader’s wanting more, which enabled them
to finish the book. But do not get it twisted, this book is fair from a sappy
romance novel. It has its share of demons, curses, and evil. However, would
this book be worth your time after learning that Cast leaves so many loose ends
untied?
Before
ever taking one breath Alek, one of the main characters within this new adult
read, finds himself vowed to righting his mother’s wrong. To do so, he is sent
on a quest to find the modern-day Oracle in hopes of restoring two worlds
before all hell breaks loose. In his search, Alek learns he isn’t the only one
seeking to find this individual, and things become extremely chaotic. Sounds
juicy, right?
To
avoid from this review being a spoiler, let’s just say there seems to be a lot
of loose ends within this read. And while readers may assume Cast ties those
knots at the end of this read, I’m here to let you know, she doesn’t. With each
turn of the page readers will crave for more of the story, more of the
unexpected, and more of the destruction of the world. But instead, they’ll only
receive a small fraction as Cast sets up for book two.
“Amber
Smoke,” was indeed a good book, but it’s missing something. And that something
keeps this read from being great. Perhaps the unanswered question, “What
happened,” was what plagued me. I’m not 100% certain, but this one had me
waiting for something that never came. On the other hand, I am not stating this
is not worth your time, but I am saying, “Don’t judge the book by the blurb.”
I give
Amber Smoke 3 ½ out of stars 5!
Happy
reading,
