When I received this title, I was intrigued as well as
excited to discover what the author had written. Such an interesting and unique
title, one can only assume that the pages that follow would be just as
intriguing. However, I was sadly let down while reading chapter one. I was so
confused that I was uncertain if I was reading a story about an animal or a
boy. The first half of Jack Shephard’s The
Goldfish and the Earthquake, read chaotically. The novel transitions added
to my confusion and to be honest I wanted to give up and call it quits, but
then came Chapter 2.
Shephard’s The
Goldfish and the Earthquake is a tale about two step brothers, Albert and
George, and adolescent jealousy. As one of the boys is uprooted from the safety
of his home and sent to live with his biological father, stepmom, and
stepbrother he finds himself in a place in which he is not wanted. Needing to
mourn the loss of his mother while at the mercy of his crazed, jealous, and
mean spirited stepbrother, Shephard tells us a story that will have you wanting
to comfort and save one character and punish the other.
This is a needed read seeing as so many kids are
faced with bullies and find themselves in situations that are not always comfortable.
If you can get pass the confusion of chapter one the book begins to take form
in chapter two. And I promise this story offers so much more than a tale about
a goldfish and an earthquake.
***I give this 3 out of 5 stars.
Happy reading!
