While fantasy novels involving vampires and werewolves are filling up
the bookshelves left and right, J.D. Faulkner’s first fantasy novel “Mirrored
Time” is definitely a refreshing change. The novel plays upon the idea of time
and how it might not always appear to follow a linear fashion, but loops in on
itself in a circular motion. I might still be reeling from the open-ended
conclusion of the first book in the Time Archivist Novels, but I thought the
novel was absolutely stunning. Faulkner managed to create relatable and witty
characters that one could connect with and a storyline filled with suspense and
magic that makes one hope that it is not that far from being impossible.
Right from the start the novel pulled me right in, making me stay up
late devouring page after page, and leaving me crestfallen once I realized I
had completed the novel. The detailed descriptions of the imagery and emotions
made me feel like I was standing in the rooms with the characters and feeling what
they were feeling. When the characters were distraught and anxious, I was
biting my nails with worry; when they were triumphant, I was doing a victory
dance of my own – inside my own head, of course. And while the action of the
novel clips along at a steady pace, the book is not difficult to keep up with.
It is evident that Faulkner is extremely talented, with a vivid
imagination and an enviable brilliance, one that makes me really jealous of
her. As someone who has always hoped for a bit of magic in my own life, the
idea of reality colliding with fantasy is both intriguing and scary, which is
probably why I felt like I could relate to the main character, Gwen Conway, so
well.
All in all, for Faulkner’s first novel, I thought it was excellent, and
I CANNOT wait for the sequel! If you are looking for a pleasant escape from your
own reality and wanting time to slip away from you, then “Mirrored Time” is positively
a book worth reading.
Cheers!
*****I give this novel 4 out of 5 stars!
