Have you ever read a book in which you wished you could wrap your arms
around the character and take away all the sorrow they carried? That is how I
felt while reading Kathleen Mackey Gallanar’s, “My Pink Room.” It was evident
from the very first sentence that Gallanar, would take me on a memorable and
relating journey of great lost. But was it worth my time, and would it be worth
yours?
What if I told you that while reading this memoir, I felt as if I’d
snuck into Gallanar’s childhood bedroom and read her hidden journal. It was so
personal. However, what would one expect from a memoir. I can tell you this
much; I did not expect the pages contained with her sorrow, her ability to
survive, and her need to keep moving despite the hollowness…to mirror my life.
A mirror reflecting my greatest sorrow, my survival, and need to keep moving. As
she de-clothed herself allowing room for healing, I shed many tears. In just
128 pages Gallanar teaches us that it is okay to let go.
“My Pink Room” is a poetically written account of a woman that
struggled with letting life happen after life threw her a curveball. In fact,
the author mentions this several times throughout the story. There was one
quote in which Gallanar said, “The greatest tragedy is a life not lived; a life
surrounded and filled with busyness, yet not lived.” (Gallanar, pg. 117). And
after reading her words several times, all I could say was, “WOW! How many of
us can truly relate to those words?”
“My Pink Room” is indeed worthy of your time, especially if you are in
need of wandering through your attic boxes of yours secrets to finally learn to
live. I thank you Kathleen for finding the strength to share your truth.
I give “My Pink Room” 4 ½ stars.
Happy Reading
