When I first started reading this novella, I was intrigued immediately by the Irish mythology that inspired this story. It is not often that one comes across Irish folklore stories with a modern twist, so I was interested to see how Cassidy K. O’Connor was going to portray her story. I can honestly say that I was hooked from the very beginning and read the entire novella in one day.

The story is told from the first-person point of view, from Sam, who is under the spell of one of these faery warriors. In the thirty-or-so pages that the novella takes place in, I thought Sam’s character was done well and I liked how humorous he was. O’Connor really captured the inner workings of the male brain.

However, I was disappointed that there was not more to Kaera’s character. I understand that O’Connor was aiming to portray exactly how this clan of faeries would go about their duties, but wish the story had been longer so that Kaera’s character had been developed more. I was interested to know more about her and was disappointed when I did not.

I thought the plot of this story was very good, but I wish it had been developed a little more. There were also many errors that could have been avoided through simple proofreading and editing. While the story was intriguing, sometimes it was hard to keep reading while stumbling along through punctuation mistakes and grammatical errors.

Despite the errors, I am already looking forward to reading Book 2 of the Love’s Protector Series and am hoping that I get to know a little more about Kaera in the next one. This story is definitely unique as it combines both mythological and romance elements for an exciting story unlike any I have ever read before.

I would give The Evolution of Sam three out of five stars!

Cheers!
