If given the opportunity to read Balazs Szilard’s Tom the Dragon, you might decide to pass. Not because there isn't a story tucked away within the pages, but perhaps due the sentence structure, lack of punctuation, and issues with the narration. In fact, the book reads more like an unedited diary that lacks the ability to capture reader’s attention, but does that imply that the book is not worth reading?
Szilard tells readers a story that is a mix of fantasy and romance about a rich kid named Tom Morgan. Loved by the ladies and hated by the guys, Tom is not interested in the girls at school until he bumps into a new student, Isabella Smith. Isabella somehow captures his undivided attention although she is not the right species.
As the story unfolds Tom learns he is not like normal teenagers, but before he is told the truth regarding his identity, something awful happens. “Sounds like this books has the potential to be a great read, doesn’t it?” Unfortunately, it falls flat and leaves readers frustrated oppose to actually being entertained.
However, Szilard has something that can be nurtured, but where it stands currently, it is too underdeveloped for readers to actually enjoy the tale. Yet, I would not advise Szilard to just give up on the book. In fact, I would suggest the author continue to develop the writing craft. Because in truth, there is something about this tale that could really evolve into a great read.
I give
Tom the Dragon 1 out of five stars!
